The Serenity Prayer, Revisited
About 1 min read
The Serenity Prayer is a well-known invocation for peace and acceptance.
Original Version
It goes like this:
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change.
Courage to change the things I can.
And wisdom to know the difference.
This prayer invokes God, but is it not essential.
Yet, it is unfortunate that those who have a different belief system usually dismiss it outright.
A Secular Adaptation
Let’s therefore try a God-free version that is a little more mysterious and poetic:
May calm rise within me for all that lies beyond my reach.
May courage awaken in me for all that calls for action.
And may clarity guide me in knowing the difference.
